The Down-to-Earth Side of Beijing

Chongwenmen takes its name from the old city gate that once stood here. Today it's a busy residential and commercial area, blending modern malls with the traditional markets of old Beijing.
The area is known for its lively markets — from the Beijing Silk Market area nearby to local food markets selling produce, snacks, and daily goods. It's a place to experience ordinary Beijing life.
Around Chongwenmen you'll find mid-range department stores, electronics markets, and the specialized shops of the area. It's less touristy than Wangfujing, offering more authentic prices.
The district is close to the Temple of Heaven, the Hongqiao (Pearl) Market, and the remnants of the old city wall at the southeast corner. A visit combines easily with these sights.
Chongwenmen is served by metro Lines 2 and 5 — very convenient. It's about 15 minutes' walk from the Temple of Heaven.
This is a working-class shopping area — expect lively crowds and bargaining at the markets. The pearl market at Hongqiao is famous for its jewelry. Open daily, with the markets busiest in the morning.
