Weather in Beijing: A Seasonal Guide

Understanding the Capital's Climate

Plan My Trip →

Beijing's continental climate brings four distinct seasons — from freezing, dry winters to hot, humid summers. Understanding the weather helps you pack and plan. Here's your seasonal guide.

Spring (March-May)

Spring warms gradually, from chilly March to pleasant May. It's generally dry with increasing sunshine. Occasional dust storms can occur in early spring. Temperatures range from about 5°C to 25°C.

Summer (June-August)

Summer is hot and humid, with July temperatures often exceeding 30°C and occasional heavy rainstorms. This is peak tourist season. Air-conditioned interiors and evening sightseeing help beat the heat.

Autumn (September-November)

Autumn is Beijing's best season — clear skies, mild temperatures (15-25°C), and low humidity. October is perfect for sightseeing, with the city's parks in their golden autumn glory.

Winter (December-February)

Winter is cold and dry, with January averages around -5°C and nights well below freezing. Snow is occasional but magical. The air is generally clearer, and the crowds are thin.

Air Quality

Beijing's air quality has improved dramatically in recent years, but haze can still occur — most often in winter. Spring and autumn, with stronger winds, generally offer the best visibility.

Planning Around the Weather

For comfort, travel in spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October). If you visit in summer or winter, plan indoor activities for the extremes of the day and dress accordingly.
