What to Pack for a Beijing Tour

Pack Smart for the Capital

Plan My Trip →

Beijing's climate — with its hot summers and cold, dry winters — demands seasonal packing. This guide helps you pack the right clothes and essentials for your Beijing tour, whatever the season.

Spring (March-May)

Spring is mild but changeable — pack layers: light sweaters, a medium jacket, and comfortable walking shoes. Early spring can be chilly and dusty; late spring is pleasant. Bring a light rain jacket.

Summer (June-August)

Summer is hot and humid with occasional heavy rain. Pack light, breathable clothing, sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses), and a compact umbrella. Air-conditioned indoor spaces mean a light layer is useful.

Autumn (September-November)

Autumn is the best season — crisp and clear. Pack layers again: light clothing for daytime, a warm jacket for evenings. The golden ginkgo season (late October) is beautiful.

Winter (December-February)

Winter is cold and dry, often below freezing. Pack a heavy down or wool coat, thermal layers, hat, gloves, and a scarf. Sturdy, warm boots are essential for sightseeing.

The Essentials

Regardless of season, bring: comfortable walking shoes (you'll walk a lot), a refillable water bottle, hand sanitizer, personal medications, a power bank, and a universal adapter. Most hotels provide basic toiletries.

Packing Light

Beijing's shops cover most needs — you can buy forgotten items easily. Pack for a 7-day cycle and use laundry services. Dress modestly and comfortably; casual wear is fine for sightseeing.
