Famous Attractions in Lhasa

The Essential Sights of Tibet's Capital

Plan My Trip →

Lhasa, at 3,650 meters, is the spiritual heart of Tibet and home to some of the most important Buddhist sites in the world. This guide covers the city's famous attractions.

The Potala Palace

The iconic white-and-red palace on Marpo Ri hill was the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas and the seat of Tibetan government. Its 1,000 rooms hold chapels, tombs, and thousands of relics. The climb is steep but the views are superb. Book your timed entry in advance.

The Jokhang Temple

Tibet's holiest shrine, the Jokhang houses the revered Jowo Shakyamuni statue — said to be a life-size image of the Buddha. Pilgrims prostrate before its entrance day and night. The surrounding Barkhor circuit is the living heart of Lhasa.

Sera Monastery

One of the three great Gelugpa monasteries, Sera is famous for its afternoon monks' debates — a lively, theatrical spectacle that takes place most days in the courtyard. The debate is the highlight of a visit.

Drepung Monastery

Once the world's largest monastery, Drepung spreads over a hillside west of the city. Its assembly hall, the Ganden Phodrang (the original seat of the Dalai Lamas), and the golden roofs are the key sights.

Norbulingka Palace

The 'Summer Palace' of the Dalai Lamas, Norbulingka is a beautiful garden estate of pavilions and parks. It's a peaceful contrast to the city's sacred sites and lovely in the warmer months.

The Tibet Museum & Barkhor

The Tibet Museum offers an excellent overview of Tibetan history and culture. The Barkhor circuit and its market provide the city's most atmospheric experience — best at dusk when the lamps glow.
