Jiuzhaigou ('Nine Villages Valley') is famous for its 108 alpine lakes in stunning shades of turquoise, blue, and emerald — a result of mineral deposits and aquatic plants. The valley's five-color pools, the Nuorilang Waterfall, and the primeval forests create landscapes that seem almost unreal.
October is the most spectacular time when autumn leaves paint the valley in gold and red. September offers clear weather and green landscapes. Winter (December-March) is serene and less crowded, with frozen waterfalls. Avoid the Chinese national holidays (early October, May Day) when crowds peak.
The valley is Y-shaped, with three main branches: Shuzheng Valley (entrance area), Rize Valley (the most scenic, including Five Flower Lake), and Zechawa Valley (the highest, with Long Lake). The park shuttle system connects all areas.
Take the shuttle to the end of Zechawa Valley (Long Lake and Five-Color Pond), then move to Rize Valley for the Five Flower Lake, Panda Lake, and the Pearl Shoal Waterfall. Finish in the Shuzheng Valley for the Nuorilang Waterfall and the tranquil lakes near the exit.
Park entrance tickets and the compulsory shuttle bus are sold at the gate. The shuttle is essential — walking the full valley is 50+ km. Book tickets online in advance during peak season, as daily visitor numbers are capped.
Most visitors fly to Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport (about 40 minutes from the park) or take a scenic 8-hour drive from Chengdu. The airport is at high altitude (3,400m), so rest on arrival. Alternatively, a private car tour from Chengdu offers flexibility and the chance to stop at Huanglong en route.
The valley sits at 2,000-3,100m — take it easy to avoid altitude sickness. Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring rain gear (weather is changeable), and carry snacks and water. The on-site restaurants are limited, so a packed lunch is wise.
