China's Adventure Playground
Plan My Trip →Western Sichuan is China's most spectacular adventure destination — a vast alpine region of snow peaks, turquoise lakes, primeval forests, and Tibetan culture. This guide highlights the essential attractions of the region.
The crown jewel of western Sichuan, Jiuzhaigou is a UNESCO World Heritage site of turquoise lakes, waterfalls, and autumn forests. Its 108 lakes in shades of blue and green are among the most beautiful sights in China. Allow a full day.
The 'Yellow Dragon' scenic area features golden calcium terraces cascading down a mountainside, set against snow peaks. The Huanglong Valley, with its five-colored pools, is best visited in summer and autumn.
At 7,556m, Mount Gongga is Sichuan's highest peak — sacred to the Tibetan people. View it from the Zimei Pass, explore the Hailuogou Glacier Park, or trek the Konka Inner Loop for a close encounter with the king of Sichuan's mountains.
The Four Sisters peaks near Rilong offer accessible alpine adventure — valley treks in Changping and Haizigou, or the achievable 5,025m Dafeng summit. The views of the jagged peaks are spectacular year-round.
Kangding, Xinduqiao, Tagong, and Litang are gateways to the Tibetan highlands, with grasslands, monasteries, and traditional culture. Xinduqiao is famous as a photography paradise; Tagong offers vast grassland panoramas.
Western Sichuan is large and high-altitude. A 7-10 day itinerary typically combines Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong with the Kangding-Tagong-Litang highlands, or focuses on the Gongga and Siguniang trekking areas. Travel in May-June and September-October for the best conditions.
