Plan My Trip →The road from Altay to Hemu is one of Xinjiang's most scenic drives — winding through birch forests, along mountain rivers, and past the alpine meadows of the Altay range. Here's your guide to this spectacular self-driving route.
The drive from Altay city to Hemu village typically follows the G216 then the scenic roads north toward the Kanas area, covering about 200 kilometers through the forested foothills of the Altay mountains. The landscape shifts from river valleys to birch and larch forests to open meadows.
The Altay-Hemu road offers a taste of true wilderness — golden birch forests in autumn, wild rivers, grazing herds, and the traditional Tuva villages scattered along the way. It's far quieter than the busier tourist roads, with endless photo opportunities.
Late September to mid-October brings the spectacular golden autumn foliage — the road's most famous season. Summer (June-August) offers green meadows and mild weather. Winter roads can be icy and are best avoided without snow driving experience.
Stop at the Burqin River, the colorful Wucaitan (Five-Colored Beach) formations, and the various viewpoints over the valleys. The Hemu and Kanas areas at the road's end are the region's highlights.
The road is well-maintained but remote — carry water, snacks, and a full tank of fuel. Mobile signal can be intermittent. Drive cautiously, especially in autumn when the scenery distracts. A 4WD is not essential in good weather but adds confidence.
