Where Is the Heavenly Lake of Tianshan?

Finding the Legendary Tianchi

Plan My Trip →

The Heavenly Lake (Tianchi) is one of Xinjiang's most famous natural attractions — a stunning alpine lake set against the snow peaks of the Tianshan. Here's where it is and how to visit it.

Location

The Heavenly Lake of the Tianshan (Tianchi) lies in the eastern Tianshan range, about 110 kilometers east of Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang. It sits at an elevation of about 1,980 meters, on the northern slopes of Bogda Peak (5,445m).

Getting There

From Urumqi, the lake is a 1.5-2 hour drive by private car or organized tour. A shuttle bus carries visitors from the entrance area up to the lake shore. It's the easiest alpine excursion from the Xinjiang capital.

The Lake

Tianchi is a glacially formed lake, 3.3 square kilometers in area, with crystal-clear waters that mirror the surrounding peaks. In Taoist legend it was the bathing place of the Queen Mother of the West — one of the most famous myths in Chinese folklore.

Things to Do

Walk the lakeshore boardwalk, take a boat ride on the lake, ride the cable car for panoramic views, or hike up toward the glacier viewpoints. In summer, the lakeside meadows are green; in winter, the frozen lake is a striking sight.

The West Queen Mother Temple

A small temple dedicated to the Queen Mother of the West sits above the lake, adding a cultural dimension to the natural scenery. The legends associated with the lake are woven into the experience.

Practical Tips

The lake is at moderate altitude — comfortable for most visitors, but take it easy on the climbs. Weather changes quickly; bring layers. Combine a visit with a stop at the nearby hot springs or the Yierke Gobi for a full day from Urumqi.
