Xinjiang Kanas: A Travel Guide

The Mysterious Lake of the Altay

Plan My Trip →

Kanas Lake, cradled in the Altay mountains of northern Xinjiang, is one of China's most beautiful and enigmatic lakes — famous for its deep blue waters, changing colors, and the folk legend of a lake monster. This guide helps you plan your visit.

About Kanas Lake

Kanas sits at about 1,374 meters in a forested valley near the borders with Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Russia. Formed by glaciers, the lake is 24 kilometers long and reaches 188 meters deep. Its color shifts from emerald to deep blue with the light and season.

The Kanas Monster Legend

For decades, visitors have reported sightings of a large creature in the lake — the 'Kanas monster.' Scientists suggest it may be a giant huchen (taimen) fish, but the legend persists, adding mystery to the already magical setting.

The Viewpoints

The best views are from the Fish-Watching Pavilion (Guanyu Pavilion), which requires a climb of over 1,000 steps (or a shuttle plus walk), and from the lakeside boardwalks. The Three Bays area offers beautiful panoramic overlooks.

The Tuva Villages

Kanas is home to the Tuva people, a small ethnic group related to the Tuvans of Russia. Their villages — especially Hemu — feature traditional wooden houses, horse meadows, and a distinctive culture. A visit to a Tuva village adds a human dimension to the landscape.

When to Visit

June to October is the main season. September to early October brings the famous golden autumn larch forests — the most spectacular time. Summer offers green meadows and comfortable weather. Winter is beautiful but very cold and remote.

Getting There

The nearest airport is at Kanas (Kanas Airport), served by flights from Urumqi. From the airport, a shuttle or private car reaches the scenic area. Most travelers visit as part of an organized tour of northern Xinjiang.
