Yunnan Adventures the Whole Family Will Love
Plan My Trip →Yunnan is a wonderful destination for families — safe, beautiful, and packed with adventures that delight children and adults alike. From cycling around Erhai Lake to feeding elephants, here's how to plan a fun, family-friendly Yunnan adventure.
Yunnan offers gentle adventure, rich wildlife, and child-friendly culture. The pace can be relaxed, the food is approachable, and the scenery — lakes, snow mountains, and old towns — captivates kids without being physically demanding.
Cycle or take a trishaw along the eastern shore of Erhai Lake, visit the Bai villages of Xizhou for tie-dye workshops, and enjoy the relaxed vibe of Dali's old town. Boat rides on Erhai Lake are a hit with children.
Lijiang Old Town is car-free and fun to explore on foot. Take the cable car on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (check the altitude with young children), visit the Naxi culture museum, and enjoy the evening music and dance in the old town square.
In Shangri-La, families can ride horses on the grasslands, visit Songzanlin Monastery, and see yaks up close. The altitude (3,300m) means taking it easy — spend the first day adapting, and consider skipping the highest viewpoints with very young children.
For animal-loving kids, visit the Yunnan Wildlife Park near Kunming or the Xishuangbanna Wild Elephant Valley if you venture to southern Yunnan. Closer to the classic route, the local farms and tea gardens offer gentle animal encounters.
Choose hotels with family rooms in Dali, Lijiang, and Kunming. Use high-speed rail for the main connections (quick and comfortable) and private cars for sightseeing days. Plan for rest time in the afternoon — children tire quickly with so much to see.
Yunnan food is generally mild compared to Sichuan. Crossing-the-bridge noodles, steamed buns, grilled corn, and fresh fruit are kid-friendly. Many restaurants will prepare milder versions of dishes on request.
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) offer the most comfortable weather for family travel. Avoid the school-holiday crowds if you can travel in shoulder seasons.
