The Grandest Panorama of the Pillar Forest
Tianzi Mountain ('Son of Heaven Mountain') is the crown jewel of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, offering the most spectacular panoramic views of the famous sandstone pillar forest. Named after Xiang Dakun, a local Tujia leader who led a peasant uprising and proclaimed himself 'Son of Heaven,' the mountain is a must-visit for every Zhangjiajie traveler.
Tianzi Mountain sits at an elevation of about 1,262 meters, the highest point of the main park area. Its name comes from Xiang Dakun, a Tujia chieftain who led a rebellion in the late 14th century and called himself 'Son of Heaven' (Tianzi). The mountain is famous for its three natural wonders: the sea of clouds, the stone pillar forests, and the sunrises. From its summit, hundreds of quartz-sandstone pillars rise from the mist like a forest of stone spears.
The most popular way up is the Bailong Elevator — the world's tallest outdoor elevator at 326 meters — from Shuirao Simen station. Alternatively, take the cable car from the Wulongya (Famie) station near the park entrance, or hike up the steep Mingfenggang staircase. The elevator can have long queues in peak season — arrive early or use the cable car as a backup. The summit is then reached by scenic walkways and shuttle buses between viewpoints.
Key viewpoints on Tianzi Mountain: (1) Yubi Peak (Imperial Writing Brush) — the iconic row of slender pillars; (2) West Sea (Xihai) — a sea of stone peaks stretching to the horizon; (3) Tianzi Pavilion — the classic panorama; (4) Shengtang Bay — a deep valley of pillars; (5) Dianjiangtai (Pointing-At-Army Platform) — named for the rock columns said to resemble a general inspecting troops; (6) Huale Mountain — sunset views. Each viewpoint offers a different perspective on the pillar forest.
Tianzi Mountain is famous for its sea of clouds (yunhai), when the valleys below fill with mist and the pillar tops emerge like islands. The best time to see the sea of clouds is early morning (before 9 AM), after rain, or in autumn and winter when temperature inversions are common. If the weather forecast predicts fog, head to Tianzi early — the views can be extraordinary.
Visit Tianzi Mountain year-round, but the best times are April-May and September-November for clear skies. Spring brings rhododendron blooms; autumn offers the clearest visibility and golden light. Summer is warm and can be hazy by afternoon — go early. Winter can bring snow, transforming the pillars into a white fairyland (access may be restricted in heavy snow). Arrive at opening time (07:00-08:00) to beat the crowds and see the morning mist.
For hikers, the ridge trail connects the viewpoints (about 3-4 hours one way). The trail from Tianzi down to the Ten-Mile Gallery is a rewarding descent through the forest with changing views (about 2 hours). The walk from Tianzi to Yuanjiajie via the connecting paths offers a longer day hike. Note: the trails have many steps — wear proper shoes and carry water. For an easier visit, use the shuttle buses between the viewpoints.
For the best photos: (1) Shoot at sunrise/sunset for golden light on the pillars; (2) The sea of clouds shots work best with a wide-angle lens and a polarizer; (3) Include a human figure or a pavilion for scale — the pillars are enormous; (4) Use a telephoto lens to compress the distant ridges; (5) The Yubi Peak viewpoint is iconic for the 'writing brush' pillars; (6) Misty days create moody, atmospheric images — don't skip them.
