Zhangjiajie Travel Guide (3)

The Pillar Mountains, Practical Essentials

Plan My Trip →

Zhangjiajie is one of China's most spectacular destinations — a landscape of sandstone pillars that inspired the film Avatar. This practical guide helps you plan and enjoy your visit.

Getting to Zhangjiajie

Zhangjiajie has its own airport with flights from major cities, and a high-speed rail station. From the airport or station, the park area (Wulingyuan) is about an hour away.

The Park vs. the Town

The region has two bases: the town of Zhangjiajie and the resort town of Wulingyuan, closest to the park entrance. Many visitors stay near the park for convenience.

The Essential Sights

The Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (Wulingyuan), Tianmen Mountain with its glass walkways, and the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon with its glass bridge are the must-sees.

Getting Around

Within the park, shuttle buses, cable cars, and the Bailong Elevator move visitors between the scenic areas. The trails connect the viewpoints on foot.

The Best Season

Spring and autumn offer the clearest views and comfortable weather. Summer is lush but busy and humid. Winter is quiet, cold, and often beautiful in the snow.

Practical Tips

Allow at least two days for the park. Buy tickets online in advance. Arrive early to avoid the crowds. The mountain weather changes fast — carry rain gear.
