A wonderful trip shouldn't end with problems at customs. Here's what you should not bring home from China — restricted items, protected goods, and the things that cause trouble at the border.
China restricts the export of antiquities and cultural relics. Only buy antiques from licensed dealers who provide export certificates. Be very cautious with old coins, ceramics, and artifacts.
Items made from protected species — ivory, rhino horn, tiger parts, and many corals — are illegal to export. Never buy them, however tempting.
Fresh plants, seeds, and certain agricultural products may be restricted by both Chinese and your home country's customs. Declare any food items.
Carry only your own prescription medicines, with prescriptions. Never carry controlled substances. Traditional medicines containing protected ingredients are restricted.
Weapons, ammunition, and large amounts of cash above the declared limit are banned or restricted. Check your destination country's rules as well as China's.
When in doubt, ask the shop and customs before buying. Keep receipts for purchases. Declare anything questionable — honesty at customs avoids serious problems.
