Move Around China with Confidence
Plan My Trip →China's transportation network is world-class, but navigating it as a foreign visitor can be daunting. This guide breaks down your options — high-speed rail, flights, metro, taxis, and private cars — so you can travel smoothly and hassle-free.
China's high-speed rail (CRH) connects nearly every major city, with trains up to 350 km/h. It's punctual, comfortable, and often more convenient than flying (stations are central). Second-class seats are affordable and fine for most journeys. Book via the 12306 app or through your travel agency.
For journeys over 800-1,000 km (e.g., Beijing to Urumqi), flights save time. China's domestic network is extensive and reasonably priced. Remember to bring your passport, arrive 2 hours early, and check which airport in multi-airport cities your flight uses.
Major cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Xi'an) have excellent, cheap, and safe metro systems with English signage. Buy a transit card or use mobile payment. Buses are also good but signage is mostly in Chinese — the metro is easier for visitors.
Taxis are metered and safe in major cities. Ride-hailing apps (Didi) are widely used and often easier — the app can translate addresses and set the destination for you. During rush hour or bad weather, allow extra time.
For scenic areas, multi-stop itineraries, and flexibility, a private car with an English-speaking driver-guide is the best option. It's particularly recommended for places like Guilin-Yangshuo, western Sichuan, Yunnan's highlands, and Xinjiang, where public transport is limited.
Buses connect smaller towns and some scenic areas. They're cheap but slower and less comfortable. For most tourists, combining high-speed rail and private cars covers everything efficiently.
The easiest way to a hassle-free journey is to let a local travel agency arrange your transport: train tickets booked in advance, airport transfers, and private cars where needed. This is especially valuable during Chinese holidays when tickets sell out.
